Chimney Removal

We plan on doing a fairly sizeable remodel in the near future (sorry kids about your college fund) and have been checking a few things off the list that were necessary to get done prior to. Having just replaced the furnace and upgraded to an on-demand tankless water heater, we are now able to remove the center chimney in our house, freeing up tons of dead space.

While my wife and I are ambitious, we don’t climb on top of the third story roof. Enter hired hands to remove the chimney down to the 3rd floor ceiling and patch the roof. The rest of the chimney? That was our responsibility. Currently we have it taken down to the ceiling of the first floor…

    • That sure makes getting the electrical up there convenient. We may do the same although between the studs. The 3rd floor is just getting opened up, but we are reclaiming the space on the 1st floor for the kitchen remodel and on the 2nd floor for reconfigured bathrooms.

  1. Hi there, we’re looking to remove our chimney as well. Who did you hire to do yours and patch the roof?

    • Hello Amy. We hired some random handyman to take the chimney below our roofline and patch the roof. We then removed the chimney ourselves. Which was strangely rewarding, quite a bit of work, and absolutely the most messy and disgusting house project we have ever attempted. The dust and debris got everywhere. I mean everywhere. So whether you do it yourself or hire somebody, try to contain it better than we did.
